First off I’d like to thank you for coming to website. This has been a passion of mine to create these images and to share them with you and I hope you have enjoyed them as much as I enjoy creating them.
I’ve always had a passion for photography and the beauty that surrounds us. As a young boy I was out with my dad who always had a camera with him and we would spend hours hiking and taking pictures. As a teenager I was really into astronomy and got my first telescope when I was about 14 years old and spent hours outside under the stars fending off mosquitoes in summer and trying to stay warm in our often -25°C (-13°F) Manitoba winters. Although the time spent outside with my telescope started slowing down I always enjoyed and marvelled at the beauty of the night sky. As I got a little older the interest in photography grabbed a hold of me. Being an outdoors person I focused on doing mainly nature / landscape photography but as I graduated from high school friends started asking me to do family photos and weddings for them. This ended up turning into a full time career and for roughly 18 years I ran Personal Expressions Photography full time. I absolutely loved meeting all the people I photographed and have made some amazing friendships through photography.
It wasn’t until a drive home with fellow photographer and good friend Doug Friesen one night when the stars were exceptionally bright that the “bug” bit again. This time I was thinking not only astronomy but astrophotography. Why not combine the love of both these passions into one art. It wasn’t long after that the idea of VII Days Art was born… but more on that later.
I currently work full time as a creative director for a multimedia company, I love spending time with my beautiful daughter and love to watch her pick up my camera and take photos of her own… maybe I’ll have to open a page for her as well?!
I’ve always said that it’s not about the gear but the person using the equipment that matters. I still believe that this is the case, however putting great gear in the right hands will yield amazing results.
I have always been a Nikon user and love their cameras & lenses. I’ve had a long list of Nikon cameras starting with an old Nikon FE-2 camera and manual focus lenses. Then came the digital age at which point I jumped into digital using and Nikon D100 6MP camera… looking back the files were far from excellent but at the time they were amazing. Currently I am shooting with a Nikon D850 47MP camera… I can easily say that this is by far the best camera I have ever shot with and the image quality is stunning!! Most of the images on this site have been created with this camera and a variety of lenses ranging from a 16-35mm all the way up to a 200-500mm lens. Along with these lenses I love using my Breakthrough Neutral Density filters to slow down the shutter speed and create the soft flowing water look.
Of course the camera equipment is only part of the equation, you also need good software and knowledge of how to properly edit your images. For this I am using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, along with other focus stacking software and Luminar & Aurora HDR.
For the astrophotography I am using several telescopes, one being the original Celestron 8″ 2000mm Schmidt-Cassegrain from my teenage years and the newly acquired Explore Scientific 8″ f/3.9 812mm scope with GoTo mount.
This list of gear is always expanding and changing as new ideas come up and new goals come about. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
